Netflix is the exclusive global streaming provider for American crime serial drama The Killing. New episodes of Season 3 are available on Netflix in the UK, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden every Monday, a day after their U.S. television broadcast.
Season 3 picks up one year after the close of the “Rosie Larsen case” covered over the first two seasons when a search for a runaway girl leads to the discovery of a string of gruesome murders that connects to a previous murder investigation.
Early reviews of Season 3 have been generally positive. Matthew Gilbert wrote in the Boston Globe that “it’s a bit of a rarity, an intimate, sprawling, and at times touching procedural that makes the networks’ versions of the genre look like simple board games.”
The Killing is based on an acclaimed Danish series Forbrydelsen, the first season of which is available on Netflix in some countries (see below).
Reviews of The Killing:
This Americanized version of a Danish hit, Forbrydelsen, is a true rarity: an adaptation that doesn’t leave you wishing you were watching the original or, worse, wondering what people saw in the original in the first place. Writer Veena Sud (Cold Case) has so brilliantly translated and transferred it to America, you never once get the feeling that it doesn’t truly belong here. — USA Today. Robert Bianco
The series is excellent, absorbing and addictive. When each episode ends, you long for the next–a hallmark of great dramas. — The Hollywood Reporter, Tim Goodman

Reviews of The Killing (Forbrydelsen)
It’s Prime Suspect meets State Of Play via Wallander – and every bit as good as that sounds. The 20-day investigation unfolds over 20 hour-long episodes, kicking off with a double bill, after which you’ll likely be hooked for the long-haul. — The Guardian, Michael Hogan
There are so many Scandinavian crime solvers besides Henning Mankell’s gloomy detective, Kurt Wallander, or Steig Larsson’s hacker heroine, Lisbeth Salander. Yet even among all those popular imports, “The Killing” stands out — it is as scary and suspenseful, but in a subdued, meditative way that is somehow all the more chilling. — New York Times, Alessandra Stanley
Season 1 (2007) 20 episodes
After a young woman is viciously raped and killed, Copenhagen Detective Inspector Sarah Lund cancels her move to Sweden and investigates the case with Detective Inspector Jan Meyer — and they soon discover a local politician may be involved.
